Hillsdale Boulevard & Alameda de las Pulgas Traffic Signal Project

Ways to Get Involved

  • Watch a virtual recording of the community meeting held online on Thursday, October 16, 2025 - Click on Link
  • View the Final Design Concepts (link) that was developed after the January ’24 community meeting.
  • Refer to the project timeline at the bottom of this project website for current project status. Staff will keep this timeline updated as we get closer to project implementation (project council award to construction).

About the Project

The City of San Mateo will install a new traffic signal at the intersection of Alameda de las Pulgas and Hillsdale Boulevard (see project area map below). The project will improve how people travel through the intersection by way of walking, biking, rolling, driving, and taking transit. In 2017, a traffic signal was requested at the intersection through the Hillsdale/Beresford Traffic Action Plan. Staff conducted a signal warrant analysis to determine if the intersection would qualify for a signal based on engineering metrics and requirements and found that the intersection met the conditions to justify a traffic signal installation.

The project will include:

  • Slurry seal work at the intersection.
  • Partially protected intersection to facilitate bike movements, shorten crossing distances for pedestrians, and force more right-angle turns for drivers.
  • Installation of traffic signal equipment:
    • Accessible pedestrian signals
    • Improved safety lighting
    • Vehicle signals
  • Protected left turns on Alameda de las Pulgas:
    • New lane striping at the intersection.
    • New crosswalk striping at the intersection.

We would like feedback from the community on the final design for the intersection which seeks to ensure safety for all users and reduce congestion at Alameda de las Pulgas & Hillsdale Boulevard.

View the final project design at this link: Final Design Concept (link). Please refer to the virtual meeting recording within the “Ways to Get Involved” section. Staff will be incorporating additional feedback received from the public in the follow-up October 2025 meetings within the final designs and hold to the project timeline as below to implement both the signal and intersection improvements necessary for this project.
