Garbage and Recycling provider since January 1, 2011. All properties in San Mateo must have garbage service. There will be three carts (Green, Blue, and Black) provided to each household to separate your compost, recycling, and waste respectively.

South Bay Waste Management Authority (SBWMA) consists of twelve member agencies including the City of San Mateo. The primary goal is to provide cost-effective waste reduction, recycling, and solid waste programs to its member agencies through the franchise hauler Recology.

On August 16, 2019, the buyback portion of Shoreway Environmental Center’s Public Recycling Center closed temporarily. RethinkWaste encourages people in search of alternate local buyback locations to visit recyclestuff.org. The Public Recycling Center remains open Monday - Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for full details on items accepted.
