Every resident has access to City services and programs regardless of immigration status.

In 2017, the City Council adopted a Resolution affirming San Mateo’s commitment to all members of our community—regardless of ethnic or national origin, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or immigration status. That resolution continues to guide our approach today.

In light of recent federal immigration enforcement activities reported across California, we understand that some members of our community may feel anxious or uncertain. Please know that the City of San Mateo and the San Mateo Police Department do not participate in federal civil immigration enforcement and do not ask about anyone’s immigration status, except as required by law. Immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government; the City may not interfere with lawful operations, but neither is it required to assist.

San Mateo is a community built on compassion, fairness, and respect for all who live and work here. We remain dedicated to ensuring that every person—regardless of background—feels welcome and safe accessing City programs, schools, parks, and public spaces. We encourage residents to rely on verified information, remain calm, and treat one another with empathy and understanding.
