Only rain water is allowed in a storm drain. Our Public Works Environmental Compliance staff is dedicated to ceasing illegal stormwater discharge. Each year, staff conduct over 100 stormwater inspections, responding to every report big or small. In almost all incidents, sustainable solutions are found and the illegal discharge ends.
If you see anyone dumping or pouring wash-waters, sewage, automotive fluids, construction materials, paint, sediment and/or silt, or food wastes into a storm drain, contact us. Reporting incidents of water pollution problems such as illegal dumping or discharges help keep our local creeks, San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean clean.
When to make a report?
- When you notice unusual odors in or near the storm drain
- When you find dumped waste in or near the storm drain
- When the drainage system has unusually large flows during dry periods
- When you see someone illegally dumping anything into the storm drain
