Code Enforcement
The mission of Code Enforcement is to work in partnership with the residents of San Mateo to promote, preserve, and maintain the City's many attractive neighborhoods and commercial areas. We do this through public education, facilitating a problem solving approach to issues, and utilizing available resources and enforcement processes to improve our community.
Staff Enforces Regulations Related to the Following Private Property Issues:
Nuisances: Weeds, inoperative vehicles, garbage containers, storage, junk in public view, overflowing garbage
Zoning: Car repair, home occupations, fences, accessory structures, pets, signs, garage conversions, Garbage pick up
Building: Additions, non-permitted construction, leaking roofs, dilapidated/damaged structures and smoke detectors
Housing: Heating in rental units, hazardous plumbing, smoke detectors, water heaters, weather protection (painting), substandard living conditions
Plumbing: Non-permitted plumbing, water heaters, leaks, flow of water into storm drains away from buildings and neighboring properties
Electrical: Unsafe and/or un-permitted electrical wiring
Mechanical: Machinery, appliances
Fire: Address numbers on houses, duplexes, apartments, egress and ingress (exits/emergency)
Graffiti: On private property only
