Author Talk - Tim Flood presents: The Flower of Canaan
Tim Flood’s first thought was to tell his mother’s difficult story of abuse in Washington State in the early 1940s. Instead, he chose to write a novel, loosely based on his mother’s experience but set far away in the Middle East and long ago in the 13th c. BCE. Then he saw the deep beliefs behind underlying the way his mother was treated. He calls those beliefs "sacred cows and golden calves," the outmoded ways of thinking that plague humanity in any era, including today. The Flower of Canaan became a story of a woman’s abuse and her courageous defiance. Writes one reviewer, the novel is “… an unforgettable portrait of a woman who refuses to let the worst moments of her life define her.” Tim will share his own emotional journey and challenges as a male writer trying to give voice to a woman’s struggles. He will also talk about the imperative to shake off still-powerful primitive beliefs about women and to evolve men’s ways of thinking about and relating to women.6:00 PM - 7:00 PMCedar RoomLibrary iCal

Writers Helping Writers - Getting Feedback on Your Writing
Frank Markowitz will cover the pros and cons of: critique groups, beta readers, classes and workshops, freelance editors and coaches, open mic programs, and (least reliable) feedback from agents and editors through the submission (query and pitch) process. He will address different types of critiques: high-level or developmental vs. line-by-line editing/review vs. focused on dialogue, technical issues, etc. He'll also discuss giving useful and constructive feedback. Finally, Frank will cover some resources for learning more about specific options. Frank Markowitz is a retired transportation planner. His semi-technical book on pedestrian safety was published by Routledge in 2022. Over the last several years, he developed his biographical novel manuscript with the help of many of the methods listed above. He is currently trying to find a publisher for this book, ideally through an agent, but agents have proven remarkably uninterested in his efforts (so far).6:30 PM - 8:00 PMOak Room Patio, Main Library 1st FloorLibrary iCal
