City Manager Alex Khojikian
The City Council appointed Alex Khojikian as San Mateo's City Manager in June 2023. Alex has over twenty years of experience managing city services and community relations for small, medium and large municipal governments leading a wide range of city activities including: city management, economic development, finance, housing, environmental sustainability, community development and transportation, risk management, parks and recreation, public works, capital projects, community engagement and communications.
Prior to working in San Mateo, Alex served as the Assistant City Manager and the Acting Community Development and Transportation Director for the City of Redwood City, where he worked on Council policy initiatives, communications, community engagement, economic development, housing, homelessness, community development and transportation, sustainability, public works, real property, special projects, strategic planning, performance metrics and priority setting.
Prior to working in Redwood City, Alex served as the Deputy City Manager for the City of Half Moon Bay. In that role he worked extensively on the new Half Moon Bay Library project and took on leadership roles with a variety of capital improvement projects. He also led efforts to reorganize and establish City departments to maximize organizational, operational and service efficiencies.
Alex has a passion for building community through engaging and collaborating with residents and businesses. Alex believes that each day is an opportunity to make incremental progress to better serve the needs of the community through proactive problem solving, innovation and sound public policy.
Alex has an undergraduate degree in political science and a minor in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree in public administration from California State University Long Beach.
