The City of San Mateo has a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. The City Council first adopted a Climate Action Plan (CAP) in April 2015 and adopted the updated 2020 CAP on April 6, 2020. The 2020 CAP demonstrates the City’s leadership to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and provides a comprehensive list of community-wide actions that will help reduce our community’s GHG emissions. The 2020 Climate Action Plan update process included presentations to the Sustainability and Infrastructure Commission, City Council and to the public.
The City completed the Climate Action Plan 2023 Technical Update as part of the General Plan 2040 update process. The updated document will be adopted alongside the General Plan 2040 in 2024.
Since the adoption of the 2015 Climate Action Plan, each year staff assess the City’s progress in implementation of the 2015 CAP and provides presentations to City Council.
