FEMA and Flood Protection

From undertaking major projects aimed at minimizing flood risk in San Mateo, to making sandbags available to residents during the rainy season, flood protection and preparation is an ongoing priority for the City of San Mateo.

There are a number of capital improvements needed to provide a level of flood protection consistent with the policies of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The City's Public Works Department continues to serve as the lead local agency in accomplishing these projects, working toward eliminating flood risk in San Mateo.

Since 2001, certain neighborhoods have been included in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA), the latest FEMA flood map has taken effect as of April 5, 2019. The North Shoreview Assessment District was created to remove these areas from the SFHA in the future.
