Recreation & Lagoon Water Quality

The lagoon and the several city parks and bike paths along the lagoon offer an impressive array of recreation opportunities, including walking, biking, picnicking, sunbathing, bird watching, swimming, fishing, boating, and other water sports. Recreational use of Marina Lagoon is administered by the Department of Parks and Recreation. Parkside Aquatic Park, located at the foot of Seal Street, offers boat launching, swimming, a sandy beach, concessions stand, and restroom facilities. There is no lifeguard on duty. The Harbor Patrol provides enforcement of regulations and boat inspection assistance and first aid, from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day.

Water samples from natural recreational waters in San Mateo County, including Marina Lagoon, are sampled each week for fecal indicator bacteria. For more information about the water sampling program, visit the San Mateo County Health webpage here: https://www.smchealth.org/beaches. To view recent or past water sampling data, visit the San Mateo Interactive Beach Map here: https://gis.smcgov.org/Html5Viewer/?viewer=beach.

Please note that water sampling results have a great deal of variability. High indicator bacteria counts do not necessarily indicate a risk to human health, but City staff post signs to advise against water contact at Aquatic Park and Lakeshore Park when bacteria counts exceed state standards. Bacteria counts tend to be influenced by the presence of wildlife in the Marina Lagoon. Also, rainfall will cause an increase in bacteria counts as surface runoff is discharged to the lagoon.
