Design Options for B Street Pedestrian Mall We’re working on improving our B Street pedestrian mall in Downtown San Mateo! We’ve created a pedestrian-friendly street closure between First and Third avenues to support outdoor dining and future events. As part of the work, we’re looking at making enhancements such as new landscaping and planters, public seating areas, and new bollards.
The City Council will review design options at the July 18 Study Session meeting beginning 5:30 p.m. Information about the design options and how to attend the meeting are on the Public Meeting Portal.

General Plan - Preferred Scenario After years of collecting community input through dozens of meetings and public workshops, the City Council will take a significant step in the General Plan 2040 Update Process at the July 18 meeting.
The City is actively working to meet state mandates to plan for future housing needs, and the General Plan sets a long-range vision for how to best accommodate future population growth. The Council will select a “Preferred Land Use and Circulation Scenario,” which sets a goal for how many new homes and what type of transportation improvements we should plan for. The preferred scenario suggests planning for a population growth of nearly 56,000 residents, 22,000 new homes, and 15,000 new jobs. The preferred alternative also considers heights and density limits for new buildings, which would need to be approved by voters during a future election if changes are proposed to current voter-approved limits.
The Council meets 7 p.m. on Monday, July 18. The staff report and information on how to participate in the meeting is available on the Public Meeting Portal.
We'll be conducting another round of community engagement this summer! Learn more about the Strive San Mateo General Plan Update at www.StriveSanMateo.org.

COVID-19 Transmission High in San Mateo County Local Health Officials Urge Vaccinations, Masks in Risky SettingsThe COVID-19 situation in San Mateo County is influenced significantly by the BA.5 variant that is now dominant in California. As the variants outcompete their predecessors, they are even more transmissible and able to evade the immune response of both vaccination and prior infection, prolonging this period of high community transmission.
San Mateo County Health continues to reinforce the importance of remaining up to date with vaccinations, as they continue to offer significant protection against severe illness and death. Find prevention strategies and tips for how to stay safe from County Health.
