Updated Health Order and Outdoor DiningYou will soon be able to enjoy outdoor dining in San Mateo County after the County Health Officer updated the Shelter in Place Order goes into effect Saturday, June 6. The updated order allows restaurants to provide dining in outdoor spaces so long as additional safety protocols are in place. There must be at least six feet of space between tables, those dining together must be from the same household, and groups are limited to up to six people. Additional sanitation and cleaning protocols are also required. We know both our residents and restaurateurs want to be able to enjoy dining safely. For weeks, the City has been working with our restaurant and business community to consider how we can provide public outdoor spaces for dining. Options include creating parklets in some on-street parking spots in our commercial districts throughout the city, as well as closing portions of B Street in downtown to vehicles to allow for more outdoor dining space. Stay tuned as we work out the details of providing more space for outdoor dining!
Review the Health Order or call 2-1-1 for information about what businesses are allowed to operate. Want to report a health order violation at a business? Please call our Code Enforcement Division at (650) 522-7011. It’s important to remember COVID-19 continues to spread in our community, and the County Health Officer Dr. Morrow warns the easing of some restrictions does not mean it’s safe to be out. Everyone should still maintain social distancing, cover your face, and heed all public health warnings. We can all do our part to protect ourselves and each other!

Peaceful DemonstrationOver the last week the City of San Mateo and Police Department have taken a number of actions to support the community’s fundamental rights to speak freely and protest peacefully.
San Mateo saw thousands of protesters during a peaceful march on Wednesday, June 3 that was organized by a youth activist group following the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Over 2,000 people gathered at City Hall to hear from speakers before walking about 1.7 miles to the Police Station. The City helped facilitate a peaceful event and stayed in close communication with our residents, businesses and protest participants leading up to and during the protest.
