Today’s protest demonstration in San Mateo is expected to be orderly and peaceful, and our San Mateo Police Department is proud to help facilitate it in a way to ensure safety for all and protect the First Amendment right to free speech. The following message includes details on street closures with estimated timing.

While the City is not organizing or sponsoring this protest, we have collaborated with the protest organizers to help facilitate a successful and peaceful event.

In Tuesday night’s Town Hall, Chief Barberini acknowledged the protest, which we anticipate will be peaceful, has caused concerns to our residents and businesses owners. We know that boarded up businesses and the fear of the unknown has brought stress to many of you, but be assured we are fully staffed and ready to address any unfortunate turn of events to keep San Mateo a wonderful place to live, work and recreate. Rioting and looting will not be tolerated, and our community can be assured we are taking extraordinary measures to ensure the safety and security of all involved.

Event Details:

The event is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. at San Mateo City Hall. At approximately 5:45 p.m., demonstrators will begin the 1.7 mile walk to the San Mateo Police Department where there will be a 3-minute moment of silence. The event is scheduled to conclude at 7:00 p.m. Local traffic will be affected by this march, therefore, refer to the list of street closures and route map below to plan for appropriate detours based on estimated timing.

This demonstration, coupled with the COVID-19 crisis, makes it more important than ever to practice physical distancing and wear a mask to protect yourself and your family. To facilitate safety at today’s protest, we will have extra face coverings for those who need them.

Stay Informed:

To help demonstrators keep the line of communication open during the event, we’ve set up a special text messaging platform to help with direct messaging to people participating or those wanting more information. Please enroll by texting the word “EQUALITY” to 888777 for possible updates specific to the event.
