Martin Luther King Jr. Center Celebration Flyer

Celebrating 50 Years!

Join us as we celebration 50 years of serving the community at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center! This unique anniversary celebration includes a walk through the past, present and future of the community center in the North Central neighborhood. There will be games, a visit from our mobile recreation van, the Community Art Project: DREAM, and the grand opening of our revamped new Teen Center! This free event is fun for all ages and open to the entire San Mateo community. Mayor Diane Papan and Parks and Recreation Director Sheila Canzian will be there to highlight the value this community-resource has played in San Mateo for the last 50 years.

The event runs 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 725 Monte Diablo Ave.

San Mateo Looks Toward Affordable Housing

Do you wonder how “affordable housing” is defined? Did you know the City has partnered with nonprofit developer MidPen Housing to create 164 units of below-market apartments in downtown? Did you know the project would include 541 parking spots for the public, on top of the 164 spaces for the residences?
Come learn about the proposal at a community meeting Thursday, March 7 where MidPen and City staff will be listening for your feedback and answering questions about the preliminary proposal. The project would transform two City-owned surface parking lots at 480 E. Fourth Ave. and 400 E. Fifth Ave. in downtown. Purchased with former redevelopment agency funds, the City is required by the State to redevelop these lots and has chosen to dedicate them to affordable housing and increasing parking availability in our bustling downtown.
The meeting begins 7 p.m. March 7 at the Main Library Oak Room, 55 W. Third Ave. Can’t make it to the meeting? We will be continuing to seek public feedback on this collaborative project as it proceeds through the planning phases. Our Vision and Values

Thanks to extensive community outreach over the last few months, the Strive San Mateo team has revamped the proposed Vision Statement for our General Plan 2040 update! What do you think about the City’s values and our direction for the future? Our draft Vision Statement highlights diversity, balance, inclusivity, prosperity and resiliency!
The General Plan Subcommittee has reviewed the draft and a revised draft will now head to the Planning Commission and City Council at two upcoming meetings. Please join them to learn about the multi-year community planning effort and the community’s vision for the future!

Bike Share Options 

As many of you may have seen the news, Lime is getting out of the bike share business and notified us they are discontinuing their bike share services in the City of San Mateo.
The City was already in the process of evaluating a permit system to regulate the industry and we are continuing to evaluate a potential program that could be open to other bike share operators in the future. The public is encouraged to attend the Sustainability and Infrastructure Commission’s March 13 meeting, during which there will be a discussion of next steps and opportunity for public input.
We are continuing to seek feedback on this evolving topic and conducted an online survey that received a tremendous amount of input. The survey results can be viewed online and included questions about bike and e-scooter sharing services. Please note no decisions have been made and e-scooter sharing services remain prohibited in the City.

Draft Report: Underground Flow Equalization System

Starting March 6, the public is invited to review and comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Report for the Underground Flow Equalization System, formerly called the In-System Storage Facility. The UFES project is part of the City’s 10-year Clean Water Program to improve and repair the aging sewer collection and treatment system. The program will help prevent sewer system overflows during heavy rains that threaten the health of City streets, beaches, waterways and the San Francisco Bay. The UFES project would be located in the eastern portion of the San Mateo County Event Center parking lot. The Draft EIR will be available for public review starting Wednesday, March 6 online at the Clean Water Program website. Hard copies will also be available at City Hall, and the San Mateo Main and Hillsdale Library branches.
You can provide verbal comments and learn more about the environmental impacts covered in the Draft EIR as well as the Special Use Permit application, by attending the April 9 Planning Commission meeting, which begins 7 p.m. at City Hall. The deadline to submit comments on the Draft EIR is May 7, 2019.

What's a Bike Boulevard? 

Is a Bicycle Boulevard the same as a bike lane? Will it take away parking or car lanes? Join the City’s Public Works staff to learn all about the plans for the City’s first Bicycle Boulevard on 28th Avenue. Should it include speed humps, curb extensions or more? Staff want to hear from cyclists of all levels on March 9 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Beresford Recreation Center, 2720 Alameda de las Pulgas.

Summer Camp and Aquatics Registration Begins!

Join us for an unforgettable summer! Registration for your favorite summer programs begins 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 6 online and in person at the Beresford Recreation Center, Martin Luther King Jr. Center or City Hall! Our Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Camp & Aquatic Programs run from June 17 to August 22, 2019. Call 650-522-SUMM for questions about our summer programs.

New This Summer:

  • Two locations for mini-camps: weeks 1 and 7. These fill up fast, so register for these first!
  • Horseback riding and sailing camps are back!
  • There is a new family entrance and changing room at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Pool!
  • Starting age for swim lessons levels 1, 2 and 3 is now 6 years old.
Registration Tips:
  • Be sure to review the camp and aquatic booklet to pick your favorite programs before Wednesday morning.
  • In case your camp or swim lesson fills up, be sure to have an alternative in mind.
  • Review dates carefully if you're registering for multiple programs.


Tax Aid

It's Tax Season, Free Help Preparing Returns

Volunteers with Tax Aid will be providing help preparing federal and California tax returns for families and individuals with incomes less than $55,000. Assistance will be available at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 725 Monte Diablo Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following Saturdays: February 23, March 2, March 16, and April 6. Participants are asked to bring related documents including social security cards or taxpayer identification numbers; health insurance statement forms; W-2s, 1099 or 1098 forms; childcare provider information and last year’s tax return if available. Police Officers Association Crab Feed Flyer

Tenth Annual Crab Feed & Casino Night

Do you love a crab feed? Well, the San Mateo Police Officers’ Association hosts the best one in town! Join them as they celebrate a decade of “cops & crab” starting 6 p.m. Friday, March 22 at the San Mateo Elks Lodge. Tickets are $80 per person or $750 for a table of 10. You’ll enjoy all you can eat crab, raffles, a silent sports memorabilia auction by Mancave Memorabilia, and comedian Michael Mancini who will emcee the event. When you’re done feasting, enjoy the casino or dance the rest of the night away! The association hopes to sell out for their tenth year in a row, so get your tickets ASAP before they’re gone! Our Community Knows How to Show Some LOVE

We would like to thank everyone who supported the City's efforts to send care packages to our adopted troops from the 101st Airborne who were recently deployed to Iraq.
Our generous community really stepped up for our Valentine's Day "Show Some Love" fundraiser by donating care package items like soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes, fly traps, girl scout cookies, books, CDs, T-Shirts, snacks and so much more! We also had a number of people write heartfelt letters to individual soldiers and decorate the more than 130 boxes that are now on their way to the troops!
