Run For City Council

Registered voters in Districts 1, 3 and 5 can file to run for City Council. The open filing period is July 18 through Aug. 12, 2022. Learn more at on our Elections web page or email clerk@cityofsanmateo.org. 

District Elections

The City recently transitioned to by-district City Council elections. After a robust community engagement initiative, a new map was created. Starting this November, voters will elect their first Council members by district. Find your district and learn more on our District Elections web page.

What is Different in District Elections?

• Voters will only vote for 1 council member, instead of all 5
• Future council members must live in the district they represent

Council Voting Schedule:

• Voters in Districts 1, 3 and 5 will elect City Council members in November, 2022
• Voters in Districts 2 and 4 will elect City Council members in November 2024
