Violins of Hope: Musical and Historical Remembrance with Dr. Kanfer and Rabbi Stein

Sunday, January 26, 2020

On the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Dr. Yedida Kanfer, Director of Community Education at the JFCS Holocaust Center in San Francisco, joins Rabbi Daniel Stein of Congregation B’nai Shalom in Walnut Creek. Dr. Kanfer and Rabbi Stein will speak about music in the Holocaust, folk tradition, and religious response to persecution. They will share music written in Yiddish, the language spoken by many East European Jews before the Holocaust. ** Oak Room, 1st Floor **

Yedida Kanfer is the Director of Community Education at the JFCS Holocaust Center, where she has been teaching about the Holocaust and patterns of genocide for over five years.  Yedida formerly served as a research scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and worked for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington, D.C.  Yedida received her PhD in East European and Jewish history from Yale University in 2011.  Over the course of her studies she lived in Russia, Ukraine, and Poland.  Having studied Russian, Polish, Hebrew, and German for research purposes, her favorite language is Yiddish, which she reads, speaks, and sings.

This is the second of eight events at San Mateo Public Library that are part of Violins of Hope San Francisco Bay Area, presented in association with Music at Kohl Mansion, Burlingame, CA to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
