View the Youth Dance & Fitness schedule! All classes on this page are virtual and will be hosted on Zoom (with the exception of the classes listed above). After registration, you will be given login information on your receipt. You may register online at sanmateorec.org or mail in your Registration Form (please print) and payment to City Hall (City of San Mateo, ATTN: Parks and Recreation, 330 West 20th Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94403).

Simply fill out the FREE Dance or Fitness coupon, email it back, and we will send you a Zoom link to join our livestream class. Try a free class today and express your inner diva! Missed a class this session?

No worries, we have a generous Make-up policy that allows a student to make-up any Dance or Fitness class they miss with our program during the current session. Just complete the Make-up slip and return it to us so that we can then provide you with the Zoom link! NOTE: Please provide us 2 business day notice to our office in order to make up a class. This Zoom link if only good for the make-up class date mentioned and to be removed after its single use.

Creative Dance

"Why walk when you can dance?"

Kinder/Creative Dance: ages 4-6 yrs.

Building upon Dancetime/Kinder Combo, children virtually continue to express their creativity through dance while being introduced to basic dance technique. Using Modern dance technique as a base, children explore qualities of movement, pathways in space and rhythmic structures. They also develop tools for making their own dances.  No class on 4/10 & 5/29.

Ballet

Pre Ballet/Tap Combo: ages 4-5 yrs.

This virtual class will introduce the fundamentals of Ballet and Tap. Children begin class with Tap, allowing them to experiment with using their feet as percussion instruments. They will learn to shuffle, front slap, heel, and more. The Ballet portion focuses on balance, alignment and center floor work.  No class on 4/7.

Jazz/Hip Hop/K-Pop

Enroll your excited 6-8 year old for Hip Hop Dance Mix to take their first steps into Hip Hop dance!

  3. JMT Prep/Choreography Class

Jazz Intro/I: ages 9-14 yrs.

Learn and build on your jazz skills. We will work on basic jazz steps, including chasses, kick ball change, and Jazz squares. Then building on to our Jazz technique with challenging steps such as pas de bourrees, turns, and kicks. Have fun learning Jazz dance in this virtual class.  No class on 4/7.

Hip Hop Dance Mix: ages 6-8 yrs.

This virtual fusion dance class is great for young dancers who want to take their first steps into Hip Hop dance. This energetic and versatile class will build dancer's skills through fun Hip Hop choreography, use of contemporary music, and games. Join the fun!  No class on 4/6.

Tap

Beginning Tap Dance is IN-PERSON at the Beresford Recreation Center! Get your child acclimated back to being in a group setting.

Skyhawks: Beginning Tap Dance: ages 8-14 yrs.

Put on your shoes and dance in this exciting introduction to tap dance class from a qualified tap instructor with experience at local dance studios. All classes held outdoors with social distancing and current safety protocols including face masks and temperature checks. Tap Shoes or comfortable lightweight shoes recommended.

Boys Dance is IN-PERSON at the Beresford Recreation Center! Sign your 8-16 year old for this fun all boys dance class!

Boys Dance: ages 8-16 yrs.

It's a guy thing! This in person dance class is for boys. The place where you break, pop, hip and hop. We also play some sports games while having lots of fun. Call if you would like to enroll a boy younger than eight, so that we may talk about possible arrangements. Call 650-594-9817 for more information. Health mandates followed; masks required, social distancing practiced, and disinfectant available. Class location: Fitness Zone in Beresford Park (near upper Tennis courts & restroom). No class on 4/5.

Fitness

Yoga for Kids: ages 5-12 yrs.

Children's level yoga poses with stories and games. Pretend to be different animals, mountains, trees, tables, and others. Invent your own pose or create a name for a pose. This virtual, playful yoga class helps to build coordination, flexibility, and calm the mind. Best if a mat is used.  No class on 4/8.
