Categories

Arts and Crafts

Arts & Crafts: Be creative in a variety of mediums from  painting, drawing, pottery, sculpture, glass art jewelry and mixed media! The only requirement is that they are original creations and not from kits.

Baked Designs and Decorations

Baked Designs & Decoration:1 layer, 2 layers or more – we don’t mind!  Just put your creative talents to work and show us your skills. Make us sorry we can’t taste them!

Book Craft

Book Craft: Take an old or damaged book and give it new life by creating a piece of art, a craft or whatever your imagination desires. 

Edible Art

Edible Art: Think fruits and vegetables are just for eating? Think again! Transform any fruit or vegetable or both and create something amazing. The only rule is that the submitted pieces of art must be 100% edible.

Flash Fiction

Flash Fiction: Write an original story of 50 words or fewer. Here’s the most famous example of Flash Fiction: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”


Floral Arts

Floral Arts: It’s time for your green thumb to come out and wow us with floral and garden creations!

Legos

Lego Creations: Calling all AFOL (Adult Fans of Lego) and TFOL (Teen Fans of Lego) to put your Lego skills and creativity to the test.  Your submission might win you the title of San Mateo Public Library Lego Master!  

Needlework

Needlework: This is an all-encompassing category.  You can choose to use one or two needles, maybe more.  Wow us with your sewing, cross-stitching, embroidery, quilts, crochet or knitting creations! We can’t wait to see them.

Pet Costume

Pet Costume: Calling all pet owners and their adorable pets! Dress up your pets in their favorite costumes, then share their best pose.

Photography

Photography (B&W, Color): This category is open to all amateur photographers.  You can use any type of camera you’dlike. Entries can be either Black & White or Color. Have fun and show us your best photo!  

Poetry

Poetry: San Mateo Poets, time to share your talents with our community. Any form of poetry is acceptable but it must be original and unpublished to be entered in for a chance at the blue ribbon.

Short Story

Short Story: Get writing! The theme for this category is “San Mateo Memories”.  Share your memories of yesteryear or yesterday.  All submitted work should be no more than 3,000 words.

Rules & How to Enter: 

  • Complete the online registration form below. 
  • Submitted entry will be in the form of photographs uploaded as part of the registration form. Please limit your photographs to no more than 3 images. All written entries should be a PDF file.  
  • Submitted entry must be the creative and original work of a single individual. 
  • Limit of one entry per category. 
  • The San Mateo Public Library reserves the right to reproduce your work. 
  • New extended deadline!  Entries must be submitted by August 16, 2020.

Eligibility: 

  • Must be at least 13 years old to enter. 
  • SMPL Summer Fair is open to residents of the City of San Mateo and the Town of Hillsborough. Proof of residency is required (current library account address may be used as proof of address).  Don’t have a card?  Complete the online application to get a library card.
  • Employees of the City of San Mateo and Town of Hillsborough are not eligible to participate. 
  • Winners will be notified by September 9, 2020.
