Salary and Benefits
Police Officer
- Base Salary: $122,924 to $146,493 (Includes July 2023 raise).
- Hiring Bonus: Up to $30,000 for those who qualify.
- Retirement: CalPERS 3% @ 55 with 3-year average final comp for “Classic” members and 2.7% @57 with 3-year average final comp for “New” members.
- Insurance: A choice of medical plans with single coverage of 100% of the lowest cost HMO (Kaiser) and City paid two party or family coverage up to 90% or the least costly HMO family plan or $160 per month if waived. City paid premiums for Dental, Vision and Life Insurance.
- PORAC Retiree Medical Trust: City pays $500 per month toward benefit.
- Uniform Allowance: $999.96 per year. Initial uniform provided by the City.
- Differentials: Master Officer (3%-7%), Specialty Unit (5%), Field Training Officer (8%).
- Educational Incentives: 3.5%- Intermediate POST, 7%- Advanced POST.
- Bilingual Differential: $5,200 per year.
- Vacation: 88-200 hours of annual vacation, depending on length of service.
- Holidays: 13 paid holidays per year.
- Leaves: 12 sick days earned per year; extended sick leave and family sick leave.
- On-Duty Wellness Program: On-duty workout time and free annual physical fitness assessment and training.
- Programs: Credit union, employee assistance, deferred compensation. Free fitness classes through City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation program.
- Unit: This classification falls within an employee bargaining unit, employees of which may be required to join and/ or pay an equivalent service fee.
Police Dispatcher
- Base Salary: $85,543 to $112,284 (Includes July 2023 raise).
- Hiring Bonus: Up to $15,000 for those who qualify.
- Retirement: CalPERS retirement 2% @ 55 with 3-year average final comp for “Classic” members and 2% @ 62 with 3-year average final comp for “New” members. Participation in the Social Security Program.
- Insurance: A choice of medical plans with single coverage of 100% of the lowest cost HMO (Kaiser) and City paid two party or family coverage up to 90% or the least costly HMO family plan or $160 per month if waived. City paid premiums for Dental, Vision and Life Insurance.

Police Records Specialist
- Base Salary: $59,163 to $77,492.
- Retirement: CalPERS retirement 2% @ 55 with 3-year average final comp for “Classic” members and 2% @ 62 with 3-year average final comp for “New” members. Participation in the Social Security Program.
- Insurance: City contributes $160/month toward health insurance. City provides a maximum cost of 90% of Kaiser. Dental and vision insurance offered.
- Uniform Allowance: $208 per year. Initial uniform provided by the City.
- Differentials: Shift Differential (4.5%)
- Bilingual Differential: $2,340 per year.
- Vacation: 11-25 days per year, depending on length of service.
- Holidays: 13 paid holidays per year.
- Leaves: 12 sick days earned per year; extended sick leave and family sick leave.
- Programs: Credit union, employee assistance, deferred compensation with 0.5% City contribution. Free fitness classes through City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation program.
- Unit: This classification falls within an employee bargaining unit, employees of which may be required to join and/ or pay an equivalent service fee.
