The San Mateo County Smart Corridors is an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) designed to improve mobility along the Highway 101 corridor in San Mateo County. The project is located along predefined designated arterial routes, parallel to Highway 101, connecting Highway 101 to El Camino Real including and not limited to SR 82 (El Camino Real) between I-380 and the Santa Clara County line. The project enables Caltrans and cities to implement traffic management strategies through the deployment of ITS elements along state routes and major local streets.
The ITS elements to be implemented for the SMART Corridor Project include the following equipment and components:
- Arterial changeable message signs
- Center-to-center communications between San Mateo County Hub and District 4 Traffic Management Center
- Communications (conduit, fiber, copper, wireless, software, and associated equipment)
- Directional signs
- Fixed or pan-tilt-zoom closed-circuit television cameras
- Power supply line and equipment
- Vehicle detection systems
Benefits of Work:
The project provides relief in that case of an accident on Highway 101 between SR 92 and Hillsdale Boulevard. The system will also help direct traffic to relieve congestion to the San Mateo Event Center for scheduled events. The project will also upgrade traffic signal control centers at city owned and maintained intersections.
All underground work for fiber optic installation is substantially complete and the contractor has started fiber optic testing. The above ground work in San Mateo, which includes changeable message signs and video cameras for traffic monitoring are on-going.
Impacts may include minor traffic delays during construction
