101st Airborne Unit – Adopted Troop
101st Airborne TroopThe History of Our Adoption of the Screaming Eagles

On December 18, 1967, while serving in Vietnam, a young man concerned about the lack of mail the members of his troop were receiving, wrote to his sister requesting that she work towards getting a city to adopt his unit.

On March 4, 1968, San Mateo adopted Alpha Company, 1-327 Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. The purpose of the adoption was to improve morale among the fighting troops with messages of love and support from home.

The City’s support of Alpha Company was overwhelming, and at the end of the Vietnam War, San Mateo was the only City in the United States to hold a homecoming parade honoring returning Veterans by opening their hearts and homes to the newly adopted members of the 101st.

UPDATED: May 22, 2015

San Mateo's Adopted Sons of Alpha Company, 1/327 Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, are currently stationed in Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan.

On May 20th, 2015, 36 volunteers joined forces at City Hall to prepare 107 personalized care packages to our soldiers who are currently deployed. Many, many more people generously helped by donating items or contributing financially for the care packages. We could not have done this without the strong support of our local community. Thank you to all who helped! San Mateo continues to lead the effort in being committed to supporting the troops of the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division for over 40 years.
We Will Never Forget!

San Mateo is proud of the overwhelming support received from City employees and the community. This display of support has served to sustain and strengthen the relationship which began on March 4, 1968, when the original unit was adopted by the San Mateo City Council.

Read the April 2015 letter from Captain Andy Bisset with an update from our deployed troop.

"Yesterday was a great day for Abu Soldiers and the Bulldog Battalion as we had our patch ceremony, commemorating the 30 days we have been deployed. All Soldiers now get to wear the 101st Airborne Division Patch on their right shoulder, representing that they have been deployed to a combat zone while a part of the unit. Abu Company has once again entered the history of the Division and we will continue to represent all the sacrifices those before us have given.... Please continue to send packages and comforts for your Solider. The mail process is moving pretty well."
