Public Works

The Public Works Department has primary responsibility for the maintenance, repair, cleaning, and new installation of the:

  • 200 miles of City streets
  • 79 traffic signal intersections (700 signal poles)
  • 7,500 street lights
  • 10 publicly owned parking lots and garages
  • 236 miles of sewers
  • 131 miles of storm drains
  • 20 miles of open creeks and drainage canals
  • 26 sanitary sewer pump stations
  • 8 storm drainage system pump stations
  • Two dams
  • One flood control lagoon
  • Three miles of levees
  • A wastewater-treatment plant

The Public Works Department also reviews plans and inspects the construction of public improvements to serve new private residential, commercial, and industrial developments and administers contracts for the collection, disposal, and recycling of solid waste. Our ServicesThe following services are provided to San Mateo residents:

  • Clearing out clogged storm drains or public drainage ditches
  • Repair of roads, potholes, public alleys, and bike paths
  • Clearing out sewer backups (up to property line)
  • Traffic signal maintenance
  • Street light maintenance
  • Street sweeping
