2010 Census Information
The Census 2010
Need help completing your 2010 Census Questionnaire?
Since 1790, the U.S. Census bureau has counted every resident of the United States. Every ten years, questionnaires are mailed to every household to count all who reside in the City of San Mateo. The census is undertaken primarily to provide data for apportionment of government funding and congressional district redistricting.
In addition to recording the number of individuals in the county, the Census bureau also collects other demographic information, including, but not limited to: age, gender, race, ethnicity, housing status, and income.
In March of 2010, census forms were mailed out to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. When you receive yours, just answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided. If you don't mail the form back, you may receive a visit from a census taker, who will ask you the questions from the form.
The majority of the country will receive English-only materials. Households in areas with high concentrations of Spanish-speaking residents may receive a bilingual (English/Spanish) form.
Any personal data you provide is protected under federal law.

More Information
The City is partnering with the Census Bureau to help ensure a full and accurate Census count through dissemination of educational awareness information. This includes the placement of posters in City facilities and dissemination of census information at community events and city mailings.
An accurate census population count is important to the City of San Mateo in a number of ways. Census data ensures fair Congressional representation by determining how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as the redistricting of state legislatures, county supervisors and voting precincts. In addition, federal and state funding is allocated to states and local communities based on census data. The data is the basis for allocating over $400 billion in Federal funding to the States. This funding includes a variety of programs, including public transportation systems, social programs, emergency services, and education. A Study by the Brookings Institute in 2009 showed that in 2007 California received about $1,145 per capita in Federal funding based on the Census. In the 2000 Census, fewer than 70% of households nationwide returned their census forms, and people went uncounted. We are hoping for a 'complete count' in the 2010 Census in San Mateo, and your participation is essential!
