The City of San Mateo Zoning Code controls the location, size, and height of structures such as buildings, garages, and fences.  The Zoning Code is intended to protect city residents, their homes and businesses from conflicting uses in nearby locations.

Zoning and land use regulations also outline acceptable activities in various parts of the city as defined in the City's General Plan and Downtown Specific Plan.
