How We Are Organized

Alignment with City Council's Direction
Strategic Direction:  Deploy technology solutions to improve the delivery of service, enhance staff efficiency and effectiveness, better track and protect municipal assets, and better prepare and respond to emergencies

Department Overview
The Department of Information Technology is composed of three functional units:

  • Application Systems Division
  • Network and Systems Division
  • Strategic Support Division

Application Systems Division
The Application Systems Division is responsible for the development, support, and maintenance of software applications such as email/calendaring, human resources/payroll, financials, etc. that are used by all departments and referred to as Citywide applications, and software applications that are used in support of department-specific functions, such as registration for recreational activities, scheduling of department personnel, etc., referred to as department-specific applications. The Helpdesk unit provides training and technical support to users on the use of desktop applications technical support and installs new desktop hardware and software packages.  The Word Processing Unit provides a variety of word processing and desktop publishing services to all City departments.  The Geographic Information Services Unit provides mapping, cartographic and geospatial analysis services to all City Departments.
  
Network and Systems Division
The Networks and Systems Division manages the City’s information technology infrastructure. This includes approximately 70 servers and the City’s consolidated storage fabric as well as the converged network which interconnects it all. The City’s network includes not only its servers but approximately 1000 workstations, 200 printers, and 850 telephones, and the City’s internet access. The Communications unit of this division maintains the City’s radio communication system used by Police, Fire and Public Works departments.  It also maintains the City’s telephone system, integrated with voicemail and call accounting systems.  

Strategic Support Division
The Strategic Support Division performs research on new and emerging technologies and identifies those that are of significant long-term value to the organization. This division also manages the administrative functions of the department, maintains the department disaster recovery/business resumption plan, develops IT policies and procedures and acts as the City’s representative on various regional technology initiatives.
