Youth Sports Instruction

Learning a sport is an important part of being a child. It is important for physical development and creates the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Parks and Recreation offers a number of different sports opportunities. For as diverse as our offerings are, they all provide important benefits to your child:

  • Build self confidence, discipline and physical strength
  • Improve eye hand coordination and body awareness
  • Explore a new sport or build on existing skills
  • Increase socialization and sportsmanship skills
  • Be challenged in a safe, non-competitive environment.

Our youth sports instruction incorporates almost a dozen different sports for your child to choose from – with more than 70 classes each quarter! For more information on any of the classes below, please see the activity guide.

Our Jr. Warriors Basketball League is an opportunity for your child to learn the game from expert coaches. This new league creates an exciting and competitive environment for children from 3rd grade through 8th grade. In addition, we have a Winter Basketball Clinic and a Summer Youth Clinic taught by Randy Metheany, former head coach of Hillsdale High School Boys Varsity Basketball & Physical Education teacher at Ralston M.S.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is an up and coming sport that combines strength, balance and flexibility with technique. Rock climbing classes for children ages 5 – 13 are taught at Granite Planet and are taught by certified instructors to make sure every class is as safe as it is fun.

The “Getting Started” class is for children ages 7 – 12 and “Basic Tricks” is for children ages 8 – 14. Both are taught by skateboard pro and owner of Atlas Skateboarding, Mike Manidis. The classes teach balance, coordination and the techniques of this fun extreme sport.

Our soccer program is taught by coaches trained in the Kidz Love Soccer method and include skills demonstrations, fun games and scrimmages all taught in a non-competitive environment. The soccer program is for children ages 5 – 12 years.

Volleyball teaches coordination, interactive skills and teamwork dynamics. Our volleyball classes are taught at our indoor facility at the Martin Luther King Community Center and are designed for child ages 8 – 12 years. Our instructors emphasize individual skills and sportsmanship.

We also have summer volleyball camps for middle and high school-aged players; the summer volleyball camps are held at San Mateo High School. Come March of every year, you can check out all of our summer camps online.
