2015 Outstanding Volunteer Honoree: Joy Addison
Joy Addison – Changing lives one word at a time
Joy started volunteering as a Project Read Literacy Tutor over 13 years ago. She started out as an English teacher at the Turnbull Elementary School Program for parents of preschoolers that enables Spanish speaking parents to help their children understand their homework and speak with their child’s teacher. Soon after, she began working one-to-one with an adult learner. Joy and Onnie her adult learner, have been working together ever since. About Onnie, Joy said, “We have a great relationship. She teaches me as much as I teach her.”
Joy recently started teaching a U.S. Citizenship class at Project Read’s Turnbull program. Joy describes herself as a history, government and civics buff and the students love the information and are highly engaged in learning. She is a Reading Buddy at George Hall 1st Grade, tutors minority students in math at St. James Community Foundation and she was a former SMPL Foundation Board Member.
“Thank you, Joy, for all of the wonderful work you have done and continue to do!”
