Larry Patterson selected as San Mateo City Manager
San Mateo, CA (March 13, 2014)...
The San Mateo City Council is pleased to announce that Larry Patterson has been selected as the new City Manager for the City of San Mateo. Patterson was appointed as Interim City Manager following the retirement of former City Manager, Susan Loftus in November. Patterson came into the interim position with specific goals to accomplish during the four month period. Within this time, he has successfully advanced important initiatives including the North B Street Improvement Initiative, the Community Development Management Audit, and facilitated a productive Council Goal Setting Session, which sets the tone for the City’s next two-year budget cycle.
Patterson has provided consistent leadership for the City of San Mateo serving as its Public Works Director for 13 years. Patterson’s leadership is an asset within the City organization and he is well-respected throughout the San Mateo community and regionally. Prior to San Mateo, Patterson was the founding Principal and owner of Patterson Associates, a transportation engineering consulting firm and worked as an engineer for numerous consulting firms in Washington State and the San Francisco Bay Area. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas and a Master’s Degree in Civil and Transportation Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
“I am honored to serve as San Mateo’s next City Manager and lead the City in a direction that is consistent with our core values while providing top notch service to our residents, businesses and community partners,” says Patterson. “San Mateo is going through a renaissance and many of our current initiatives are setting the ground work for a progressive and sustainable future.”
Prior to the appointment, the City Council completed a thorough recruitment for the city manager position. Over a four month period, the Council developed and implemented a selection process with a national recruitment firm that included outreach to the community and city employees to identify qualities desired in the next city manager. As part of the selection process, applicants were screened and top candidates were interviewed by panels comprised of representatives from San Mateo’s homeowners associations, businesses, labor groups, employees, and the City Council.
“Patterson has a clear vision for the City of San Mateo and over this interim period has demonstrated an ability to implement it and produce results,” says Mayor, Robert Ross. “He is injecting new energy into the organization, engaging the community, and establishing the foundation for many exciting changes. The entire City Council is excited to work with Larry. He has our complete confidence to guide San Mateo into a new era.”
