2014-2022 Housing Element
Housing ElementThe City of San Mateo is in the process of updating the Housing Element and will host a series of public meetings on the topic of housing in San Mateo, including reasonable accommodation.

Your ideas and suggestions in these public dialogues help to shape our community's housing policies and programs.

How will San Mateo's housing grow?
The City of San Mateo Housing Element sets forth a comprehensive, long-term plan to address the housing needs of the City of San Mateo.  It is the City's framework for housing goals and policies and helps guide designs that will facilitate the creation and preservation of housing here in the city.
Like much of the Bay Area, our community is changing.
County Health Services projects that approximately one in four city residents will be over the age of 65 in the next 15 years.  This will drive the need to provide walk-able, transit connected housing options with consideration for where senior amenities are located.

Additionally, San Mateo county has an inventory shortage of workforce housing, which is particularly difficult for lower-income jobs such as waiters/waitresses, pre-school teachers, and emergency medical technicians.
Why are we doing an update now?
State law requires every city and county to adopt a Housing Element as part of its General Plan.  Housing Element law requires local governments to adequately plan to meet their existing and projected housing needs, including their fair share of the Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA).  The law recognizes that in order for the private sector to adequately address housing needs and demand, local governments must adopt land use plans and regulatory schemes that provide opportunities for housing development.
