About SMART
SMART, or San Mateo Acting Responsibly Together, is a citywide, year-long public outreach campaign that encourages those who live and work in San Mateo to change their everyday behaviors to contribute to reducing San Mateo’s carbon footprint. In order to encourage individuals to pledge to reduce carbon emissions, the city reaches out to multiple community groups and elementary schools.
In the future, as a SMART individual, you will receive a SMART card that you can use at local participating businesses for discounts and other promotional items such as reusable cloth bags. SMART individuals will also have the satisfaction of supporting a business that is taking the first step toward environmental responsibility.
Our Goal
The ultimate goal of the campaign is to create a smart and sustainable environment for those who live and work in the city. We would like to reach our goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by making 2009 emissions lower than the 2006 baseline emissions. As the years go on and more and more people learn about the importance of environmental responsibility, we hope to exceed the 2020 state target of emissions equal to that of 1990 levels.
