San Mateo’s Adopted Sons of Alpha Company, 1/327 Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division have returned from a 12-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.  They are currently spending much deserved time with their friends, family and loved ones. San Mateo is proud of the overwhelming support received from City employees and the community.

This display of support has served to sustain and strengthen the relationship which began on March 4, 1968, when the original unit was adopted by the San Mateo City Council.

Read a letter from the Company Commander (CPT John B. Walsh) expressing appreciation to the City of San Mateo for the support that was offered during their deployment.

UPDATED: July 22, 2011
"Of all the supporters for ABU Company, the one that will stick out in the minds of the Soldiers more than any other is the City of San Mateo. While it was somewhat expected that we would receive support from our friends and families, the men were always deeply touched by the fact that a group of people that they had never met would reach out and provide such far reaching support." Read More

welcome.gifThe History of Our Adoption of the Screaming Eagles
On December 18, 1967, while serving in Vietnam, a young man concerned about the lack of mail the members of his troop were receiving, wrote to his sister requesting that she work towards getting a city to adopt his unit.

101patch.gifOn March 4, 1968, San Mateo adopted Alpha Company, 1-327 Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. The purpose of the adoption was to improve morale among the fighting troops with messages of love and support from home.

The City’s support of Alpha Company was overwhelming, and at the end of the Vietnam War, San Mateo was the only City in the United States to hold a homecoming parade honoring returning Veterans by opening their hearts and homes to the newly adopted members of the 101st.
