Chilou Ballelos
Chilou BallelosChilou’s approach to teaching dance fitness is through encouragement and positive reinforcement. She makes a point of learning all of her students’ names and delivers clear visual and verbal cues. She enjoys seeing her students smile while feeling successful learning the choreography during each and every class. Her love of dance brought her to teach U-Jam Fitness™.

She has been sharing the exhilarating experience of U-Jam with the San Mateo community for over two years. She is also a Certified Zumba Fitness Instructor. In 2015, she began teaching POUND: Rockout. Workout.™ This class is a full-body cardio jam session, combining light resistance with constant simulated drumming. Chilou’s goal is for everyone to have fun and to make you forget that you’re working out, so you can’t go wrong with trying her classes.

Chilou is a certified AFAA Primary Group Exercise Instructor and is also CPR certified.

Gloria Boehm-Yu
Gloria Boehm-YuGloria is an RN, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Mindful Personal Trainer, Writer and former Professional Dancer in NYC. She became certified with the American College of Sports Medicine almost 20 years ago, beginning her career in corporate fitness in NY with Time Warner/HBO, SONY Music, etc. She has always been a passionate advocate for acquiring wellness though lifestyle and behavioral change and now includes aging proactively to her educational approach.

Becoming an RN added to her conviction in sharing the message of maintaining an active lifestyle to be well, along with practicing mindfulness techniques in order to become more self-aware, self-accepting, and self-loving. Returning to dance allowed her to reclaim an innate part of her creativity and thus more completely fulfill her identity.

Gloria has been published in numerous corporate newsletters and online at mindfulandwell.wordpress.com. She is also certified by the American Council on Exercise and with SCW Fitness for Pilates Mat.  

Adriana Buenaventura
Adriana BuenaventuraAfter years of working as a Marketing professional in the Health industry, Adriana realized that there was a different calling for her and decided to take her passion for yoga to the next level by becoming a certified Ananda Yoga teacher.

Her goal is to be able to both share and teach yoga and meditation not only as a path towards physical healing, but a path to developing inner harmony as well. She is passionate about the multiple benefits that a yoga practice has at the physical, emotional, and mental states.

Adriana is a yoga, meditation and mindfulness teacher as well as a yoga therapy practitioner. She offers her yoga teachings to those who would like to experience a gentle and spiritually uplifting yoga practice with the use of affirmations, and an inward approach. Adriana’s specialties and experience include teaching Ananda Yoga, Restorative yoga, Prenatal yoga, Seniors yoga, Children’s yoga , Meditation, and Mindfulness. She has also taught yoga retreats in Mexico, Colombia, Hawaii, and at various women’s retreats.  

Loren Chin
Loren ChinMaster Loren King-Loon Chin is a 20th-generation lineage holder in the Chen Family Taijiquan (Tai-Chi) and a Certified Senior Instructor conferred by the Chen Qingzhou Martial Arts Association (accredited by China's Ministry of Education) in Xulu Village, Henan Province, China (birthplace of Tai-Chi).

He is trained intensively on the deep theories of Chen Taiji & Wuji Qigong under Grand Master Chen Qingzhou (was recognized, in 1994, as one of the twelve outstanding Tai-Chi players in the world).

Master Chin serves as a Judge at various tournaments and competitions in the Bay Area including the Annual UC Berkeley Chinese Martial Arts Tournament. He has received media coverage on various events and activities in the Bay Area.

Jill Daly
Jill gets great satisfaction from teaching all kinds of exercise. She has been teaching Fitness classes for over 30 years. Her background is in dance, and in the late 1970’s she discovered the world of fitness. This provided her the opportunity to work with people of all ages and abilities, to share her love of movement and to help others move more fully.

Jill is now focusing on fitness for older adults because she wants us all, as we age, to realize the benefits of exercise. Jill has an M.A. in dance and has studied kinesiology, physiology, exercise physiology, and anatomy at the university level. She has attended countless workshops and acquired many certifications, most recently the Balanced Body comprehensive Pilates program.

She truly appreciates that the City of San Mateo has provided us with great facilities and wonderful opportunities to work out together. Come and join us!

Angela Fonte
Angela FonteAngela has always been athletic and has taken classes for the last 20 years through the Parks and Recreation department. She has trained in and taught Martial Arts classes for the last 15 years. In 2005 she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and became even more passionate about fitness and the benefits of having a regular fitness schedule.

Many people would ask her for advice knowing the issues that she was dealing with and she found that she thrived on helping others realize and implement an exercise routine.

She has been teaching Fitness for San Mateo Parks & Recreation since 2006. She is certified for Group Exercise classes by AFAA and SCW, a certified Personal Trainer, and a Certified Pilates Instructor. In 2012, she also achieved her 2nd Degree Black Belt. It is her desire for students to feel better, gain strength, and see how their hard work improves their everyday life. “By committing to a regular exercise routine, students will feel more energized each day, sleep better each night, and have the desire to get out and have fun!”

Mary Furuta
Mary FurutaMary has been a fitness instructor for 11 years. She has had a passion for dance and fitness since she was a child. She danced in school programs from grade school up through high school. She started taking classes at Beresford Recreation Center after her second child was born in 1994.

Years of taking classes at the Recreation center and occasionally substituting for instructors gave her the inspiration to go into teaching fitness herself.

Mary is a certified Group Fitness Instructor through AFAA and SCW and is certified by the Arthritis Exercise Foundation. She is a licensed instructor for Zumba, Zumba Gold, and Zumba Toning, and has attended workshop seminars and conventions for Tabata, Yoga, Mat Pilates, Barre, Strength Training, Aqua Fitness, and Senior Fitness. As Mary says “We are all at different fitness levels so work at your own pace, be patient with yourself, and most importantly, have fun!”

Peggy Guaraldi
Peggy GuaraldiPeggy was introduced to Yoga at the age of 14 when her mother had a television show, “Yoga with Jinx.”

She has been practicing and studying both Yoga and meditation for over 40 years, and has given many workshops throughout the Bay Area.

She is a certified Yoga and meditation instructor through Alliance Yoga Teacher Training, and has also studied in India with Swami Kriyananda. With over 4 decades of devotion to her Yogic path, Peggy's wisdom is a magnet to those seasoned and skeptical alike.

Whether you find her through recommendation for physical healing or simply as a truth seeker, you are in the right place.

Linda Krinke
Linda KrinkeLinda has been teaching yoga for over thirty years for the City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation. She always seeks to inspire a love of the discipline in her students, just as she was inspired by her own great teachers.

At the San Francisco Integral Yoga Institute, Linda undertook intensive training as a teacher and received her Yoga certification there. She continues to expand her personal practice through teaching Yoga levels I, II, and III/Advanced, as well as her popular Yoga for 50+ classes, geared toward  the challenges that come with age. Linda also attends retreats to further her knowledge.

Yoga may be great for your body, but Linda knows it can be much more that. “I hope students will find not only the physical benefits of yoga, but the spiritual benefits as well.”

Donna Lanam
Donna LanamDonna left Kalamazoo, and her roots outside of Detroit, heading west in her mighty mustang, with dreams of becoming a Dancer, Choreographer, or Star- whichever came first. She ended up finding her heart in San Francisco, and has been dancing happily ever after. She has taught for the City of San Mateo for over 35 years.

She loves to create ideas for fitness- those that –keep you so engaged, , so you think it's nothing but fun!! With pride, she can claim as her own: Strollerobics® (featured on the ABC World News) Aqua Ma,-  and Yoga Fusion.  Her newest idea arrives in September 2015!

Donna says “I like to think of myself as a Health and Wellness event planner, because that is really what I care about - seeing people getting fit through movement and feeling like they just attended a GREAT Party!”

Patti Michelsen
Patti MichelsenPatti has been teaching for almost 40 years and she loves her job. Her classes will provide improved strength, flexibility, balance and cardiovascular health to help you live an active life.

Her motto is, “Live the life you Love" Patti strives to create a community of active, healthy and positive people who inspire others to do the same. She is certified by The American College of Sports Medicine and continues learning new techniques, taking classes and studying the research to provide the best for her students.

She is grateful for the amazing, strong, resilient women and men she has the pleasure to instruct. Patti says, “Come join us!”

Annette Rivlin-Gutman
Annette Rivlin-GutmanAnnette believes that anyone, regardless of age or skill level, can practice yoga, and she enjoys sharing yoga with anyone who is eager to learn. She realized its healing benefits after a horseback riding accident left her with a painful neck injury.

Through yoga and meditation, Annette recovered from her injury and gained inspiration to help others find their own path toward a healthy yoga practice. A practitioner for over 18 years, she is a certified graduate of the Pacific Yoga Teacher Training and Advanced Studies Program, where she studied with Theresa Elliott and Kathryn Payne.

Annette continues self-study by attending workshops with masters like Judith Lasater, Felicity Green, and Kofi Busia as well as CEUs with AFAA. Annette is also a certified AFAA primary group instructor, teaches Latin Dance, is a former video producer and teacher and the author of two children's book.

Gaby Torres
Gaby TorresGaby is a very fun and energetic Zumba Instructor. Since starting teaching at King Center in 2014, her classes have doubled in size due to her popularity. She has always loved exercising and dancing and found that Zumba had the perfect combination of both. She took classes for seven years and in 2013 she decided to become an instructor. She feels that becoming an instructor was one of the best decisions she has made.

Zumba has positively impacted her life in many ways including making her feel better about herself, both physically and emotionally and she has become a more confident person. Her goal is to provide that sense of confidence to her students. She feels that each class provides an opportunity to grow as an instructor by learning from her students, which allows her to provide a better Zumba class experience. She strives to pay close attention to her students and make safety a priority.

For Gaby, Zumba is about having an hour to yourself, getting a great workout, and having fun! Gaby says, “Every time I dance I turn into a better version of me. Life is better when you dance!”

Julia Walsh
Julia WalshJulia has loved to dance ever since she was a little girl, but it wasn't until Zumba came along that she was able to combine her passion for dance with being a fitness fanatic. Julia has a BS degree in Kinesiology (Human Movement Studies) and is a certified Zumba and Zumba Kids & Kids Jr. instructor.

She feels that Zumba is the perfect way to get a great workout, build core strength and have fun.  She often tells her students, “Just be yourself, feel the music and let the music move you.” Who would've thought that all the shaking and grooving to the best tunes worldwide could also get you to be fit?

Laura Wratten
Laura WrattenLaura began her teaching career while in college nearly three decades ago, teaching aerobics and group exercise. Laura’s passion for exercise and love of teaching has never wavered. She began taking group exercise classes at a local gym when she was sixteen, to supplement her dance training.

When she found out she could get paid for something she loved doing, she jumped at the chance. Laura says, “I believe in carving out time in my day to exercise, even if it means getting up early and exercising before dawn or a late night workout video before bed.” It’s part of my daily regimen, just like getting up and going to work or taking care of my kids.” Laura now teaches Pilates & yoga as her “hobby job”. “It’s the perfect workout for me, both physically and mentally.” She has been teaching for the City of San Mateo since 2011.

Being a working mother of three, Laura hopes to motivate her students to exercise and also educate them on the many health benefits regular exercise has to offer. She has Group Exercise and Pilates Mat certifications from AFPA.
