Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not sure what is the right class for my child?
You can purchase a Guest Pass at the center’s front desk for $13 for a one hour class  that allows your child to try a class before committing to it. If you register immediately following the class, your Guest Pass fee will be applied to the registration for the class. Guest Passes may only be used for classes with available slots, so please check with the front desk first.

Where are the dance classes taught?
The majority of the dance classes are taught at Beresford Community Center. However, we have six locations so please check the activity guide to make sure you know the location of your child’s class.

What is the makeup/cancellation policy?
Because our dance program is so popular, we can not offer make-ups for all classes. However we do offer make ups for any classes that have multiple listings such as; Dance Time, Kinderdance and Pre Ballet/Tap combo classes. Please check with the front desk before making up a class to ensure there is space. Must be currently enrolled in our Dance & Fitness program in order for Make-Up Policy to apply.

Will my child have the opportunity to perform?
Yes! All children over the age of 4 who would like to, have an opportunity to perform. We have two large performances – one during the holiday season and one in the spring.

Do current students have priority registration for a class?
Yes. Current students can secure a spot in a dance class before registration is open to the general public if they are continuing on. This occurs during priority registration which opens approximately two weeks before general registration is available.

Can my child switch classes during the year?
No. We ask that students continue in the same class for the school year (September through June). Exceptions to this practice are possible based on ability. Please check with the Dance Supervisor at (650) 522.7444.

How is placement for the Fall determined?
At the end of each dance year (in June), our instructors provide recommendations based on evaluations of each dancer’s attendance, dance ability and effort. We will mail you the instructor’s recommendation in the summer.

Does the City of San Mateo have any partners?
Yes. We partner with The San Mateo Dance Association, an auxiliary, non-profit organization that provides support, volunteers and other assistance to us throughout the year.

Where can I purchase the required outfit for a particular class?
You may purchase the required dance outfits at any dance or sports clothing store. The San Mateo Dance Association also sells Danskin leotards on a pre-order basis. Order forms are available at Beresford Community Center or at the first day of class. See the leotard order form for more details.

Are there any volunteer opportunities?
Yes, we have a Dance Crew for youth 9-18 years of age. These volunteers help in the classrooms, office and behind the scenes at our two annual Dance Shows. At the end of the year, each crew member is awarded a scholarship from the San Mateo Dance Association to be used towards their future studies in Dance. We also use many adult volunteers for our annual performances to assist with costumes, sets, props, etc. For more information about volunteering, please call (650) 522-7444.
