When do I need a Sign Permit?
A permit is required for:
  • New signs
  • Modified signs
  • Painted signs
  • Illuminated signs (An electrical permit is also required)

Are there any requirements for temporary signs?
Temporary signs also require a sign permit from the Building Division.

Temporary signs include:

  • Banners
  • Pennants and similar devices for business grand openings; promotional, new model homes or sales events.
  • Time limit: signs can be displayed 30 days from the date of installation, but not to exceed 60 days per calendar year.
  • Flotation or air-filled devices are not allowed.

What if I just want to put a sign in my window?
Window signs do not need permits, but may not cover more than 25% of the total area of the window up to a total of 50 square feet of signage per street frontage.

How do I get a permit?
To obtain a sign permit, contact the Building Division at (650) 522-7172.

Are there any other rules or regulations regarding signs?
Yes, the Sign Code limits the number and sizes of signs allowed.  Please review Title XXV - Signs or call the Planning Division at (650) 522-7202 for more information.
