Exiting a Burning Building

Make sure you know all building exits, and the paths for each. Before opening doors, feel it with the back of your hand to check if it's hot. If it is, choose a different exit.

If the door is cool, open it cautiously and continue along your route, closing the door behind you. Make sure impaired persons are aware of the alarm and lend assistance as you are able.

Crawl Low
If you encounter smoke while exiting, try an alternate route. If you must exit through smoke, crouch and crawl 12 - 24 inches above the floor where the air is cleaner. Leave the building as quickly as you can, and call the fire department from a neighbor's house.

Remain Calm
If you are trapped, close all doors between yourself and the smoke. Call the fire department, if you can, even if you see fire trucks through a window. Stuff wet rags, towels, or clothing in the cracks around doors to keep smoke out. Signal firefighters by waving a light colored cloth or flashlight and wait to be rescued.

Stop, Drop & Roll

If your clothing catches on fire, stop where you are, drop gently to the floor, cover your face with your hands to protect your face from flames, and roll over and over to smother the flames. If you cannot drop to the floor, smother the flames with a blanket or towel.
