Message from the Chief
I am honored to serve the citizens and community of San Mateo as your Fire Chief.

The San Mateo Fire Department is made up of the finest fire service professionals in the State of California. The members are highly trained, well educated, extremely motivated, and very focused on our mission of service to the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We have 6 fire stations strategically located throughout the City to provide rapid response to fires, medical emergencies, rescues and other emergency calls for service. We participate in a Joint Powers Agreement providing automatic aid response throughout the San Mateo County's Fire Service delivery system.

Fire Engine
Each Fire Station has 1 fire engine staffed by 1 Fire Captain and 2 Firefighter/Engineers. One member of the Engine Company is a Paramedic. Most of our firefighters have special skills including, but not limited to, rescue systems, confined space, swift water and hazardous materials.

Fire Aerial Ladder Truck
We staff one, 100' aerial ladder truck, out of Station 21. The truck responds to all major incidents in the City. It carries special equipment including "the jaws of life," ladders, heavy rescue equipment, jacks, saws, pumps and many other special tools. The truck is staffed by 1 Fire Captain and 3 Firefighters. One member of the Truck Company is a Paramedic.

All our Firefighters are State-certified Firefighter II and Emergency Medical Technicians. One member on each Engine Company is a State-licensed paramedic, permitting the department to provide advanced life support services.

Fire Action Consensus Team (FACT)
We utilize a participatory management model, known as the Fire Action Consensus Team (FACT).

FACT is made up of a cross-section of fire department employees and exists to solicit and assess input from all ranks of the organization.

It is the shared responsibility of all department members, working through FACT members, Command Staff, and Union Representatives, to ensure that the collaborative management process is used properly.

This team:
  • Provides accurate and appropriate data necessary for making policy, procedures, plans and solutions
  • Assists the Fire Chief in his duty to envision the future of the department
  • Maintains a broad perspective, addressing big, department-wide issues, always with an eye to the future
